What the hardware actually does

Home networking involves two separate jobs, and different pieces of hardware handle each one. Understanding what each device does makes every decision after this easier.

Modem

A device that connects your home to your internet service provider's network by translating incoming signals into usable data.

Router

A device that distributes an internet connection to multiple devices in your home, over Wi-Fi or ethernet cables.

ISP

Internet Service Provider: the company that sells and delivers your home internet connection (such as a cable or fiber provider).

Firmware

Built-in software inside a router that controls how it operates. Manufacturers release updates to fix bugs and security issues.

WPA3

The current Wi-Fi security standard that encrypts traffic between your devices and your router, making unauthorized access harder.

Mesh network

A home networking setup using multiple nodes placed around the home to deliver consistent Wi-Fi coverage across a larger area.

Ethernet

A physical cable that connects a device directly to a router or modem, typically delivering a faster and more stable connection than Wi-Fi.

Guest network

A separate Wi-Fi network on the same router that keeps visitors or smart devices isolated from your main home network.

The modem is the bridge between your home and your internet service provider (ISP). It translates the signal coming in over a cable, fiber, or phone line into data your home devices can use. Without a modem, there is no internet connection at all.

The router takes that internet connection and distributes it to every device in your home, whether over Wi-Fi or a physical ethernet cable. It also manages the traffic between devices on your local network, such as a phone streaming to a TV. The router is what creates your home network; the modem is simply the door to the outside internet.

Modem, router, or both in one box

ISPs frequently supply a single device that handles both modem and router functions. These combo units (sometimes called gateways) are convenient at the start, but they come with trade-offs worth knowing.

Combo units make sense when simplicity matters most: one device, one power cord, one setup process. They are a reasonable choice for smaller apartments or households with modest device counts. The downside is that upgrading only one function means replacing the whole unit, and ISP-supplied gear can lag behind in firmware updates and security patches.

Separate modem and router setups give more control. You can upgrade the router without touching the modem, or swap the modem if you change ISPs, without losing your router settings. This approach also tends to produce better Wi-Fi coverage and speed over time because you can choose hardware suited to your home's size and layout.

For households thinking about long-term value, a purchased modem paired with a separate router generally costs less over a three- to four-year period than paying a monthly modem rental fee indefinitely. That said, verify ISP compatibility before buying any modem: not every model works with every provider or connection type.

Mesh systems versus single routers

A single router placed in one room works well for smaller homes or apartments where most devices stay within a reasonable range. The Wi-Fi signal weakens with distance and through dense walls, so a single router positioned poorly can leave dead zones in corners, garages, or upstairs rooms.

A mesh system uses multiple nodes placed around the home. The nodes communicate with each other and pass devices seamlessly from one to the next as you move around, similar to how a cell phone transitions between cell towers. The result is more even coverage across a larger footprint.

Mesh systems cost more upfront than most single routers, so they are not automatically the right choice. A single router positioned centrally in a one-story home or apartment usually performs well. Mesh becomes worth considering when a home has multiple floors, thick concrete or brick walls, or layouts where a central router cannot reach every room effectively.

Setting up your network for the first time

First-time setup follows a consistent sequence regardless of the hardware you have chosen.

  1. Connect the modem to the incoming cable or phone line from your ISP, then power it on and wait for it to fully initialize. This usually takes two to three minutes.
  2. Connect the router to the modem using an ethernet cable, plugging into the port on the router labeled WAN (Wide Area Network) or Internet.
  3. Power on the router and wait for indicator lights to stabilize. Consult the router's documentation to confirm which light pattern signals a healthy connection.
  4. Use a phone or laptop to connect to the router's default Wi-Fi network. The default network name and password are usually printed on a label on the router itself.
  5. Open a browser and navigate to the router's admin page. The address is typically printed on the same label (common examples include 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Log in with the default admin credentials.
  6. Follow the router's setup wizard to name your network, set a password, and confirm your internet connection is active.

If no internet connection appears after these steps, call your ISP. The line may need to be provisioned on their end before it carries a signal to your modem.

Basic security steps every household should take

A router with default settings is not secure. Manufacturers ship devices with the same admin username and password across thousands of units, which are widely known and easy to exploit.

Write down your new passwords

Store your Wi-Fi password and router admin password somewhere physical, like a slip of paper kept with your router documentation. Password managers work well too. Losing the admin password means resetting the router to factory defaults and starting over.

Change two passwords before you do anything else. First, change the Wi-Fi password your devices use to connect. Second, change the router's admin login password, the one used to access the settings page. These are separate credentials and both matter.

Set your Wi-Fi security protocol to WPA3 if the router supports it. If not, WPA2 (AES) is acceptable. Avoid WEP or WPA, which are outdated and considered insecure.

Enable automatic firmware updates if the option exists. Router manufacturers release firmware patches to address security vulnerabilities as they are discovered. Keeping firmware current is one of the most consistent protective measures available.

Consider creating a separate guest network for visitors and smart home devices. Guest networks are isolated from your main network, so a compromised smart bulb or a guest's infected laptop cannot reach your computers or stored files.
